The official trailer for Detroit has been unveiled. The historical drama, directed by Kathryn Bigelow (Zero Dark Thirty, The Hurt Locker) tells the true story of a group of black men, who while staying the Algiers hotel during the 1967 Detroit riots, find themselves on the wrong side of jittery cops after a misunderstanding escalates.
At the center of it all is John Boyega, a.k.a. Finn from the recently rebooted Star Wars franchise, as a cop looking to play mediator in an incredibly tense situation. Honestly the film wasn't even on my radar--credit the randomness of Youtube--but to say it has the potential to resonate in our current social and political climate is an understatement. I'll definitely be checking for it when it's released in August.
