Obama Nominates Black Gay Man For Federal Judgeship


This is good news, at least if you're not on a quest to secede from the union. Today President Obama nominated William Thomas to a judgeship on the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida. If the appointment is confirmed, Thomas will become the first openly gay black man to become a life-tenured federal judge.

Currently a judge on the state court in Florida, Thomas was recommended for the nomination by the Presidential Appointments Project, coordinated by the Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund.  Previously out black lesbian Deborah Batts was appointed by President Clinton, becoming not only a judge in the Southern District of New York, but the first out LGBT federal judge overall.
