Random Question: Does An Afterlife Make Life Meaningless?

Most people, be they Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu or any other assortment of religious affiliation have some sort of belief in an afterlife--heaven, the celestial plane, nirvana, etc.--and are trying their hardest to get there. But does the concept of an afterlife cheapen the value of the current life we have? If you spend all of this life reading, worshipping, praying, bowing and obeying simply to gain access to this other world, does that make this life meaningless? If the main object of our earthly lives is to make preparations for our judgement in the next, then our current reality is simply a means to an end.
