Oscar-nominated director Ava DuVernary will direct a documentary about Prince for Netflix. DuVernay told Deadline the music icon was "a genius and a joy and a jolt to the senses...he shattered every preconceived notion, smashed every boundary, shared everything in his heart through his music. The only way I know how to make this film is with love. And with great care. I’m honored to do so and grateful for the opportunity entrusted to me by the estate."
Lest you think the Purple One is throwing a mighty side eye from the afterworld, the late superstar actually reached out to the director for a possible collaboration before his 2016 death. So the doc, in a sense, has his blessing.
The Queen Sugar creator has been granted full access to the star's archive of recordings and unreleased material by the estate, with DuVernay and her production team paying multiple visits to Paisley Park over the past few months. In addition to the Prince documentary, DuVernay is working Central Park Five, also set to stream on Netflix, as well as screen adapation of Jack Kirby's The New Gods.
