George Michael Dead at 53

Sigh...2016 just had to take one more from us. While I didn't experience George's 80's/early 90's heyday firsthand, from Wham!'s "Careless Whisper," and "Wake Me Up (Before You Go Go)" to the solo classics like "Faith,"and "Freedom! '90,(and yes, the video was and still is everything)", you can't deny he was great singer, producer and songwriter. Get into a few songs below.

Also, take the time read this great piece by The Guardian on Michael's status as a defiant gay icon.

The Gayest Thing About Christmas....

Photo: NBC

I'll leave you gals to finish the sentence above. In the meantime, grab an eggnog and read Bryan Moylan's article about the subtle/not-so-subtle (or imagined, depending on if you buy his argument) gay subtext of the Christmas flick Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer

An excerpt:

“For a year the Donner family did a good job hiding Rudolph’s — non-conformity,” the narrator tells us, pausing slightly before landing on the right euphemism. This is the closet of Rudolph’s parents devising, which he goes along with thanks to the internalized homophobia that he inherited from both his father and Santa, the superego of the North Pole, who is equally distressed by Rudolph’s difference. Santa even goes so far as to tell Donner that he should be ashamed of his son and try to change him. It’s almost as if Santa is a church elder trying to force Rudolph into conversion therapy."

Yea, Moylan's goin' in. Read the rest HERE.

Hitler's American Model

Photo: Jack Delano/FSA/Library of Congress
James Q. Whitman's upcoming book Hitler's American Model, details how the Nazis studied America's race law's in creating their own form of institutional racism, and includes verbatim transcripts as the regime met to craft the anti-Semitic Nuremberg Laws in 1934.

An excerpt states "That transcript reveals a startling fact: the meeting involved lengthy discussions of the law of the United States of America. At its very opening, the Minister of Justice presented a memorandum on US race law and, as the meeting progressed, the participants turned to the US example repeatedly. They debated whether they should bring Jim Crow segregation to the Third Reich."

"They engaged in detailed discussion of the statutes from the 30 US states that criminalised racially mixed marriages. They reviewed how the various US states determined who counted as a ‘Negro’ or a ‘Mongol’, and weighed whether they should adopt US techniques in their own approach to determining who counted as a Jew. Throughout the meeting the most ardent supporters of the US model were the most radical Nazis in the room."

Definitely on my must-read list for 2017. Find out more about it HERE.

Kanye West Meets With Donald Trump

Photo: AP/Seth Wenig

Ugh, what fresh fuckery is this? Kanye West has met with Donald Trump at his transition headquarters, a.k.a Trump Tower, in New York. As you'll see in the clip below, Yeezy is mum with the press on just why he's meeting with the President Elect, other than saying "I'm just wanna take a picture right now."

Maybe it's part of a plot to get the Donald in a buddy buddy pose he'll later use in some eviscerating, artsy interlude blending sociopolitical commentary and a tribute to Kwame for his next tour. But chile who honestly knows, because we are eons away from 2005 Kanye West at this point.

I'm....I'm just really trying bite my goddamn tongue and reserve judgement, because 'Ye has been going through some thangs lately. Even thought my inner GIF can't help but feel like this:

'Kanye what 'chu doin', what chu doin'.....

*Holds right hand to chest and breathes deeply*. Anyway, see for yourself below.

***UPDATE*** According to Kanye, he requested the meeting with Trump to have an opportunity to "to discuss multicultural issues. These issues included bullying, supporting teachers, modernizing curriculum, and violence in Chicago. I feel it is important to have a direct line of communication with our future President if we truly want change."

It's not completely unbelievable--this is after all, the same man who once said George Bush doesn't care about black people (ah, the good ol' days). So who's to say he didn't speak with Trump about those issues? But for now my eyes stay set in this position:

Senate Approves $170 Million to Fix Flint Waste System

Some much needed good news out of Michigan. The Senate passed the Water Resources Development Act 95-3.

The measure, according International Business Times "provides $100 million to help fix Flint’s drinking water system, contaminated by lead leached from aging pipes when the water supply was switched from Lake Huron to the highly polluted Flint River. It also provides $50 million for healthcare for children who suffered lead poisoning and $20 million to forgive Flint’s old drinking water loans. The bill also provides $70 million to activate a $1 billion fund for low-interest loans to finance upgrades to water infrastructure."

The bill, which now heads to the House, also provides $40 million for programs to help communities reduce lead in water systems, along with another $100 million to be used for lead testing in schools and daycare facilities.
